Bomb threat empties Wellsboro school
sunGazette.com

WELLSBORO — Authorities evacuated Wellsboro Area High School students for several hours Friday morning after discovering a bomb threat on a bathroom wall. In the end, nothing was found.

“The bomb threat was found on a bathroom wall, with a specific message,” said Wellsboro Area School District Superintendent Phil Waber. He said he could not elaborate on the message or to whom it was directed.

Students were evacuated shortly before 9 a.m. to nearby Rock L. Butler Middle School, and after a thorough search of the high school by K-9 dogs from Lycoming and Union counties, returned to classes in the high school by 12:30 p.m.

The Wellsboro Police Department and school district issued a joint statement Friday afternoon.

“Parents of Wellsboro Area High School students were notified that there was an unspecified bomb threat and, per protocol, students

and staff had been evacuated,” the statement indicated. “Law enforcement and maintenance staff made a sweep of the high school complex to insure no personnel were on the premises and to conduct a general clearing of the building.

“K-9 bomb handlers from the Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Williamsport City Bureau of Police responded, and a thorough search of the premises was conducted. Nothing was found,” the statement said, noting the building was declared safe at 11:45 a.m.

Other agencies assisting were the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office, Wellsboro Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police and Wellsboro Borough Police while the Wellsboro Fire Department was on standby.

The investigation continues, officials said.
