No Drugs, Contraband Found in County Prison
BY MARK GILGER STAFF WRITER mark_g@newsitem.com Published: Friday, April 24, 2009 5:14 AM EDT SUNBURY — Five K-9 handlers and their respective dogs conducted a random, 90-minute search of archaic Northumberland County Prison on Thursday morning for narcotics and contraband, but no drugs or other illegal materials were discovered. The search was coordinated by Northumberland County Sheriff Chad Reiner in response to reports at this month’s prison board meeting that marijuana and contraband were discovered inside the 133-year-old prison. Searches have been conducted at the prison in the past, but Thursday’s was the first one held this year. Reiner coordinated the narcotics search in conjunction with Warden Ralph “Rick” Reish. The warden said all areas of the prison, including “A” and “B” blocks, the female detention area and work release unit, were searched. After the search, the warden stated, “The dogs had a few hits, but no drugs or other illegal items were found. The dogs were primarily looking for marijuana and methamphetamine. A couple hits indicated a presence of marijuana was in some of the cells, but nothing was found.” Participating in the search, which began at 9:40 a.m., were Reiner and his dog, Clark; Sunbury Patrolman Scott Hause and his canine, Rocky; Northumberland County Adult Probation Officer Chris Kemble and his dog, Cloud; Union County Sheriff Ernie Ritter and his canine, Heidi, and Montour County Deputy Sheriff Ryan King and his dog, Kohler. Reiner thanked everyone who assisted in the search and commended Reish for his cooperation. The warden said similar searches will be conducted periodically throughout the year.
