Saving lives is part of the job, say two York County deputies who rescued a man from a carbon-monoxide-filled home. The York County commissioners honored sheriff's deputies Holly Arndt and Justin Koller Wednesday for jobs well done.
The deputies encountered the situation Friday afternoon while serving civil documents to a Lower Windsor Township resident.
Koller, 23, said the door opened as he knocked on it, and that he and Arndt were overwhelmed by the smell of exhaust and hazy smoke. They announced their arrival, called York County Control to convey the situation and went inside.
Arndt, 27, walked toward the rear of the two-story home where, she said, she saw a man lying on his side near the back door.
"It looked like he was

trying to get outside," she said. "I thought he was dead."
Arndt called Koller, and the two carried him outside; Koller, who is trained in emergency medical techniques, assisted the man until ambulance crews arrived while Arndt determined no one else was inside.
"I feel it's my duty to save people," Arndt said. "I was just out doing my job."The man was taken to York Hospital for treatment.Koller and Arndt deferred to Lower Windsor Township Police regarding the origin of the carbon monoxide and other details about the investigation.
Chief Dave Sterner said officers arrived to find a vehicle running in the attached garage. The doors to the house had been left open in an attempted suicide, he said. |
