Retired New York Trooper Dies From Exposure to Ground Zero Fumes

NEW YORK — A retired state trooper with local ties has died from cancer caused by exposure to the noxious fumes from the Sept. 11 terror attacks, the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office said.
State Police Sgt. Charles Salaway, 55, died Saturday.
“The men and women of the Saratoga County Sheriffs Office offer our condolences to all of his family and friends which include his wife Saratoga County Sheriff’s Investigator Courtney Salaway and his son Saratoga County Deputy Sheriff Carson Salaway,” the sheriff’s office said.
State Police said Salaway, 55, was assigned to New York City to work on the search and recovery effort at the World Trade Center. A number of rescuers have been sickened and others have died…
